Hey Everyone! Man is this season a challenge or what?!! In my six seasons of coaching this is the first time I've lost the first two games of the season and tonight was the first time I've lost so badly. To say that we lost tonight would be the understatement of understatements. After the Bucs scored their third touchdown I stopped keeping track of the score. All I know is that we lost 6 – 50+ points. Yes, that is not an error, you read it correctly.
To be honest with you unless we played them before there was no way for us to prepare for this one. As an overall team they were much faster than our boys and much sharper on both offense and defense. We simply were not prepared.
I started off coaching offense but during half time I decided to change to coaching defense so I can have a better look at their offensive scheme. We're gonna play this team two more times before the playoffs and knowing this I had to do all I can to observe their whole game so that we can be prepared for next time. This game was a learning experience.
The first thing I learned is that I must go back to having a set offense and a set defense. The kids are still not 100% on the things they are learning which means that I'm giving them too much to learn. We are two weeks into the season and the consistency has not begun to gel.
The second thing I learned is that I'm not utilizing the individual kids at their best. One of my top players was out due to the flu tonight, had he been there the bleeding might have slowed down a bit but not much. As for everyone else, I have some thinking to do. The line up must change and that is gonna be some tough planning that my assistant coach and I must do before next practice.
I must take full responsibility for tonight's loss, I've been too wishy-washy with where I want the kids to be on the line ups. Two weeks into the season and we are not starting to gel like we should be, that is my fault. I must find a way to turn it around before it gets really ugly. Tonight was a wake up call. I'm not coaching 6, 7, and 8 year-olds anymore. Just as my kids are more mature, I need to take on a more mature approach to coaching this team.
If I taught the defense to work as a team we could have shut down the Bucs tonight. If my offense was consistent we would have scored more. I owe it to this team to make them better, to get them to win games and from this point until the end of the season I will be obsessed with nothing else.
This is a good team and I know that if I whip them into shape the correct way, we can go all the way. If the Bucs are the best that this league has to offer then I know that we can go all the way. From now until Sunday I will be going back to the drawing board for the soul purpose of maximizing this team. I believe in these kids and know that we can go all the way but I have to make that happen.
I never want to be on this end of such a loss ever again and I don't want my team to experience such a loss ever again. Time to get serious. Until next time, see ya!
