Coaching Flag Football Spring 2008 - Part 10

Hi everyone, this past weekend was a good game and not just because we beat the Rams 20-12. It was a good game because the Rams are a good team and it was a hard game full of emotions. Currently we are 4-2 and full of confidence about the playoffs, despite last week’s loss.
The Rams are coached by Mike Jenkins who is the CEO and founder of the league, with that said you can see why this was a big game for us. Jenkins is a very fundamental coach and always does a great job with his team. Coach Jenkins and coach Parker are cousins, so in a lot of ways playing against Jenkins is like playing against Parker with an added element.
Not only is Jenkins the CEO and founder of the league, but he is also the boss of the refs. With that said you could imagine how the game went. The refs called everything right down the middle. I have no problem with this, but I wish that it were like that with every game. For example, usually right before the ball is hiked, the refs check to see if the kids are off sides and warn them to make the adjustment. This game had no such mercies.
Up until this game we’ve played the season thus far with only 3 maybe 4 penalties called against us throughout the season. This game was a record breaker with about 12 or so calls against us, one of those calls got under my skin and that is when I got upset.
The Rams had the ball and right before the play began I made sure that my pass rushers had their feet in the proper location for a rush. It was 4th down, after that play the ball should have been ours but they called illegal rush against us saying that my pass rushers had their feet across the line. This gave the Rams a much-needed first down. I was hot so I told the defense “shut them down.” The Rams didn’t score again but they did come close a couple of times.
I guess I’m to Jenkins as Parker is to me because Jenkins has never beaten me yet. This game could have gone both ways, but unlike our game against the Titans the offense was on point, which always seems to be the case after a defeat. My QB had 1 interception early in the game and after that he lived up to the name on his jersey, “Lil Manning”.
Next week we play the Steelers as we begin to really fine-tune our game for the playoffs. After the Titans’ game, we were forced to reexamine our offense, which led to some good changes for the offense and some improvements were made on the already solid defense. The Steelers are not a bad team and this game can go either way also, so I hope I come to you next week with more good news. Until next time, see ya!
