Coaching Flag Football Spring 2008 - Part 5

What a way to start the season! The Eagles started on a good foot as we beat the Panthers 20 – 14 in what I though was a game that started as a sleeper but quickly became one of the most intense games I’ve ever coached. Now our record is 1-0.
Both teams started very sloppy and sluggish, but once we picked up momentum so did they and I must tip my hat off to the Panthers’ coaches because they did a great job. Another cool thing about this game is that we face them again in the last game of the season so I know that game will be a championship type game because they will be coming back for revenge and we will be ready.
I must say that when it was time to step up the Eagles were able to successfully get the job done. I also realized that I have a much higher expectation for this team then I thought. I came into the game with no expectations but as the game moved on I realized that I didn’t want to lose; or more like we should not lose then when they (the Panthers) started scoring the feeling evolved in to "no matter what it takes we will win", and the kids started catching that same vibe. Those kids are as competitive as I am.
This game did a great job of showing us where our faults are and what we need to do to improve from this point on. We were not as bad as I had though, although had it been the Titans we were playing the outcome mat not have been as it was. We didn’t have flags to practice flag pulling until recently and that game exposed how desperately we need to work on flag pulling. Hand offs were horrible to the point where we didn’t do too much running plays, and all the other things that raised concern was more on an individual level and can be resolved in time.
Next week we play the 49ers who took the liberty of scouting our game. They lost their game but it was against the Titians so there wasn’t much surprise there. When we play them next week I will not be taking that game lightly at all. Those guys know how to coach a team and I will not be surprised if they go deep into the playoffs, I definitely see them as a team to be concerned about despite their lose to the Titans.
This game was a first for me because I have never coached defense before in a game. My assistant coach and I agreed to learn both side of the field that way if need to we can change the course of a game just by us swapping positions. Because the offense was doing so well, I decided to keep him on offense and he did a great job.
I think that one of the coolest things about this game was the fact that the kids now realize that we need practice. The night before I had to come down on them pretty hard for goofing around and not taking practice seriously.
Now that we have flags we will be doing flag drills this week as we prepare for the 49ers game. From this point on it will be all about tweaking and perfecting what we've already developed and I will be expecting a much cleaner game from the boys next week. Until next time, see ya!
