Coaching Flag Football Spring 2008 - Part 3

Another week of practice has come to an end, which means another week closer for the season to begin. Every coach I’ve spoken with thus far all claims that they want to start the season off with a victorious start. I, on the other hand, have all intentions of using this season to prepare for the games that really count (the playoffs and that elusive championship).
Coach Parker and I spoke, recently, and we both agree that going into the playoffs under the radar is better than coming in winning every game. In this league, when you are doing too good, other coaches make it a goal to pay a lot of attention to you by watching your games and scouting your players.
Last season, the Steelers had so much attention; I even heard that other coaches would appear during their practices. I can’t say for sure if that truly happened or not, but in this league it wouldn’t surprise me.
Right now as it stands, I don’t think we are a threat to anyone; yet. In my opinion, we are behind schedule. We haven’t even done anything on flag pulling yet. One reason for this is because we have only been able to practice for one hour on Weds and Thurs. Another reason is because I keep forgetting to tell everyone to bring flags from previous seasons; two issues which I hope to rectify this week.
This past weekend I got together with just the offensive players, and I liked what I saw. We have a new player who seems to fit in very well. During our offensive practice, he showed very good receiving skills and could run pretty fast. In fact, I was impressed with the whole offensive team, as they all adapted well to the plays. I truly believe that offense will be the least of our concerns this season.
This week I will have to address the defensive players. Many of them recently made clear their desires to play offense, and a lot of them have the talent to do so. However, positions are limited. I’ve even flirted with the idea of having two teams play both offense and defense; but the more we practice, the more it doesn’t make sense. One of my goals this week will be to sell the value of defense to the defensive team and the importance of their rolls in it. If I’m successful, I believe that it will affect the way they play defense in a positive way.
This week, I will be working with the defense while my assistant coach drills the offensive players with the plays. I have not liked what I have seen with the defense when we scrimmage, and I hope to get them straight by the week’s last practice on Sat. When we get into next week’s practices, I want us to be more repetitious and less educational. Our first game is March 1st, and that date is coming faster with each passing day. Hopefully, we will be prepared. If not, it will be fine by me as long as we steadily improve throughout the season and are ready for the playoffs.
Until next time, see ya!

Hey coach, i've been a fan of these blogs since the beginning and I think it's great. This season you haven't said anything about winning every game and being the Don Shula of flag football. Is this team not as good as your other teams or are you losing confidence? Rockness Fan on 2/18/2008 9:26:17 AM
Thank you for the kind words. I haven't lost any confidence and my Don Shula dreams are still intact. I'm tackling this season from a different angle that's all. Winning and losing will not be as important to me as improving. Don't get me wrong; I'm playing every game to win, however if we win every game but don't improve I would not be able to consider this season a success because I would have failed in my job. So this season my focus will be on getting us to improve with each passing week, that way when the playoffs come we will be an unstoppable force. Rockness on 2/18/2008 11:46:44 AM
I also forgot to address this one point. I truly believe that this is the most talented team I've every coached so winning is really not a concern for me right now. Rockness on 2/18/2008 11:51:27 AM
