Well everyone, today the 49ers lost 13-6 in a very exciting game. The loss however is not the issue this week: It’s me, but we’ll get to that later.
The coach of the Lions is the same person who coached the Vikings my first season and I love playing against him because he is a smart coach with a great attitude. He is the first person that I noticed who can see what I’m doing and changes his plans on the fly. He is good and has done a great job with the Lions this year.
On defense we could have pulled more flags, and our QB finally started playing the way we want him too. Overall I was very please with our kids today.
I’ve decided to step down as offensive coordinator for the team and hand that position to one of my assistant coaches. It truly was not an easy choice to make, but for the sake of making it past the first round and winning it all this season, it is very necessary.
As I have stated in previous seasons, I came from a basketball background. I know basketball inside and out and can teach it very well. My first two seasons in coaching football, I was very lucky to have a bunch of kids who already knew the game, which meant I didn’t have to teach anyone anything. The one or two kids we had that was new my assistant coach taught.
Even though I’ve picked up a few things here and there as far as how to run with the ball and some basics with the QB, it has not been enough. The last two seasons I noticed how some coaches were able to look at what the defense is doing and adjust accordingly, I have not been able to attain that level of football I.Q but that is not the worst of it.
Recently I have discovered that my offensive schemes are only good against teams with weak defense. That fact became more apparent today, which is the reason for my decision.
Since I started coached Flag Football, I have had the most talented teams in the league but my shortcomings have always stopped us from winning the championship. Once again this season I have the best team ever and if they are going to make it all the way they’ll need the best offensive coordinator helping them. I am very fortunate to have two assistant coaches this season that know football as good as I know basketball, and if we are to take it all the way I need to utilize everyone’s strong points.
From this point on I’ll let my assistant coaches do what they do best which is run the offense and defense, and I’ll be able to coach both offense and defense while doing what I do best, which is to walk with a L.I.M.P

I am fully committed to this team winning the championship this season; and we are going to win it all; even at the expense of my pride. Until next time, see ya!

I wrestled with that decision for a good part of the day and in the end it was the most logical choice to make. Rockness on 11/5/2007 7:37:01 AM
Mike, You will always be the king. I know it's hard to step back and look at the whole picture. We commend you in all your efforts, but we know your the guts behind it. Richard & Mary & Steven Mells Richard Mells on 11/9/2007 1:10:22 PM
I would like to thank all you guys for coaching the team and especially my Steven. I know you guys see me sitting in my car watching, but unfortunately, thats all I can do. I have an illness which unfortunately could kill me. I just wanted you to know that I may not know your names, but you guys are the greatest, all you guys. Thank you for being so good to my son....RMells Richard Mells on 11/9/2007 1:20:55 PM
Thank you guys for your comments, they really do mean a lot to me. And I must say that Steven has truly come a long way since he started playing with me the first season. I am truly proud of him. He is a better QB than Austin was and that is saying a lot because Austin was my star player. Rockness on 11/10/2007 9:42:47 PM
