Hello folks and welcome to another addition of coaching flag football. I like to start off by apologizing for the late entry this week it’s really been a busy few days for me. Well I guess all great careers have their peeks and their valleys and right now it feels like the Mighty Chiefs are walking through the valley of the shadow of death. We lost two games in a row falling to the Eagles 12 – 20.
This loss wasn’t even about the Eagles, our boys just wasn’t listening in the huddle. Ultimately we lost to ourselves. Coach Parker always tells me that the team with the good coaches are the teams that improves throughout the season, which leaves me to question if I’m a good coach or not.
This second loss had me evaluating my performance as head coach this season. This time last season we were 4-1 and having fun. Currently we are 3-2 and much more serious than last season.
I think one reason for the seriousness this season is because those who played on the team last season believe that we should have went much further then the first rounds of the playoffs. Another reason why I’m taking it seriously now is because I just realized that our first 3 games were against weaker teams. Now that we’re playing against quality teams the flaws that I’ve ignored all season long are biting us right where it hurts and I feel it’s my fault. Our team should be improving instead we are not.
During this Tuesday’s practice we started off a little differently. We had a heart to heart starting with me asking them how they felt about the loss to the Eagles and it was a real bonding experience as they shared how they felt and why they believed that we lost the game. Of course I shared what I saw and gave directions towards focusing on the things that hurt us and for the first time this season we were unified and focused on becoming the best team that we can be. That opening lead to one of the best practices we’ve had all season long and now we’re ready to move on.
The Redskins won by the skin of their teeth along with a bit of pure luck and their coach knows it. The Eagles won with greater luck and the funny thing is they don’t know it. If we run into the Eagles during the playoffs, they’ll know it then.
This Saturday we face Parker and his Seahawks. I hope Parker and his team bring it on, because we will be ready for them. Until next time, see ya.
