Hi all those out there in cyber land, and welcome to another blog of coaching flag football. I'm pleased to announce that the Mighty Chiefs started this season off on a good foot by defeating the Packers 12 - 0. If this game is any indication of how the other games will be, then we're in for a real competitive season. The Packers are a better team then the score will suggest. Penalties plagued both teams and offensive errors happened throughout the game for both teams (which is expected for the first game of the season), but in the end it was defense that was the deciding factor. I can't speak highly enough about the way the Chiefs played 'D'.
At one point of the game the Redskins intercepted the ball and made it to within 5 yards of the end zone and the Chiefs simply shut them down. It was a proud moment indeed. Last season I only had 7 kids, this season its 12 (maybe 13) and boy is that a big difference. I remember the first season my son played in this league which was last summer, that team had only 7 kids as well. In one of the games, we played a team that had about 12-13 kids just like I have now and they had a parent keeping stats (I believe it was the Chiefs). Some of the parents on my son’s team along with myself notice them taking stats and we began snickering to one another and ridiculing them, saying things like 'That's too much', and 'This is pee-wee flag football; why do they need stats?' Well if I could remember who that coach was and find that coach today, I would truly apologize. This season I have a second assistant coach devoted to keeping stats during games. It's the only way to make sure that all the kids get to play with as close to an even time as possible and play both offense and defense.
The thought did cross my mind to have half the kids dedicated to offense and the other half to defense, but let's face it; defense may win the game, but offense get the glory and for some reason this is knowledge that is ingrained in the minds of all 6-8 year olds that play sports, at least it seems that way to me. So to make sure that they all have fun, I've decided against designating them to offense or defense. Yes this makes it harder during game time, but it's well worth it to see them all having fun and that's what really counts. Because our defense shut out the other team, the kids will be treated to ice cream next practice, plus I'll be giving away prizes based on best offense, best defense, hard worker, best listener, and team player. I did this last season and it had good results, not just for the games but for life.
Our next game is two weeks away against the Patriots. I'm gonna have to step up practice because those two weeks off could kill us.
So far the only challenges I know of is the Redskins, and the Seahawks. All the other teams I know nothing about, and to tell you the truth, I don't care, I think its better that way for the kids. Last season I would divulge too much information about the other teams and the kids would sometimes come to the games with a pre-determined notion that often wouldn't go our way. This season I'm telling them the same thing for each game; 'We can beat them as long as we play hard from beginning to end.' Until next time, see ya!
