winds of change

June 2006
nba draft 2006

Imagine being hired as a car salesman supervisor and you are expected to have 82 cars sold in 1 year. This is the car company you've always wanted to work for and they've offered you very nice commissions, bonuses, plus a very high salary so that you would come join their company. However, within your 1st year everything goes wrong; you only ended up selling 23 cars, which for the company was worse then the years before, and you didn't get along with none of the sales people you where in charge of and on top of that you begin to publicize the company's dirty laundry. Needless to say you get fired in the most humiliating and public way, but that doesn't stop other companies from contacting you and offering you large amounts of money to work for them days after leaving that job. Wouldn't it be nice if the real world worked just like that for you and me? Well for Larry Brown it seems like it does.

Despite all the drama that took place between Larry Brown and the Knicks last season, despite the fact that under his watch the Knicks suffered the lowest season of their glorious franchise history with only a 23 win season, and despite Larry Brown publicly ripping his team apart after almost every game, Larry Brown is still considered a hot commodity and throughout the NBA any team would pay him crazy dollars to head coach their team.

Johnny Davis had reached the title of head coach twice in his 30 year career. The first time with the 76ers who had a 21 win season which lead to him getting fired and then hired as an assistant coach elsewhere. He stayed an assistant coach throughout the NBA for a while until the Magic Promoted him after firing Doc Rivers who lost 18 games in a row. Davis' run with the Magic was worse then his run with the Sixers. Even though he had won more games in that season (30), expectations where too high and he was let go with only 2 months left in the season. Today Davis is an assistant coach for the Pacers. Very few head coaches in the NBA can get away with having a record like Brown had last season, get fired and still have other teams dying to have them as head coach the very next season.

Larry brown will more then likely coach again before the end of this season, the question is where? Recently he paid a visit to the Hawks who seem to be courting Brown for the position. Jeff Van Gundy is in a do or die situation this season with the Rockets, if he can't produce Larry Brown would be an ideal coach for the current roster. But if I was a betting man I'd put my money on the Bobcats to end up with Brown for 2 reasons. 1) they have the money to pay him whatever he wants, and 2) He has a connection with the newest owner of the Bobcats, Michael Jordan.

The Bobcats are just about ready to really join the NBA instead of being a doormat team, within a season or two, or three, they will start making runs to get to the playoffs. This season they have lots of high hopes with Okafor expecting to make a comeback, Adam Morrison expected to be fighting for rookie of the year, did I mention Michael Jordan who is still a very influential guy in this league, and next summer they'll have tons of money to get top free agents. This would be the perfect time for the Bobcats to get the services of Brown who has a good record for building championship teams.

Wherever Larry Brown ends up you can bet on one thing; His games against the Knicks will be filled with great tension in the air. Even though Larry Brown has nothing to prove in the NBA world with over 1000 victories under his belt and a couple of rings on his fingers; to the Knicks, he'll have lots to prove and say on the courts. Till next time, see ya.

Hey to have such a great reputation that supercedes even your most recent and disappointing results, and then still have people's respect... the man must be a legend. Or its gotta be the shoes.

Just look at the Spurs.  Before he came into the picture they were going nowhere.  The Spurs are still benefitting from the foundation he set.  Same thing goes with the Pistons.
