Flag Football Part 2

Hi everyone, I'm glad to announce that in the world of NFL Flag Football, the Kansas City Chief are now 1 and 1. Over the weekend we defeated the Vikings 12 to 32 or something like that. Before the game I was checking out the competition and I knew before the kick off that we had them beat, however I didn't want to beat them too bad.
My 6 year old play in this league during the summer, it's a year round league with 1 month breaks in between. That was my first experience with this league and I was very impressed with the coach my son had. Because we were undefeated it was easy to enjoy every game, but there was one game I was a little disturb by. We were ironically playing the Chiefs and in that season the Chiefs had not won a game at all and we (the Saints) where the only undefeated team. This was the last game before the playoffs. The coach knew that we could beat them coming into the game but that didn't stop him from crushing the Chiefs. The final score for that game was 60 something to 0. Although we won that game, the victory seemed hollow to me because I really felt bad for the other team. This past weekend I found myself in the same situation and on the same winning side, but this time I changed the outcome by placing all my star players on Defense mostly. We could have killed them like the other coach would have done, but these are 6 to 8 year old kids and little league is designed to build confidents, not crush it. However, by placing my best players on “D”, Defense really ended up winning this game. After losing our first game due to a lack of Defense, my kids compensated nicely. I, on the other hand was a hot mess.
The officials from the first game were very relaxed with everything, these last refs where so strict I got a penalty twice during the game for taking too long in the huddle. I also need to remember to use the timeouts given to me. At one point I was so lost that I coast us a chance at getting an extra point. It was an embarrassing moment. As the head coach I need to be more sharp out there, If we where playing a good team, we might have lost because of me and that’s not fair to those kids; so I have a lot of work to do.
During the game, the kids wanted to run certain plays but I told them no because we didn't perfect them yet. I explained to them that until they have it right during practice I won't run those plays because if they are done wrong we might lose yards or worse; get intercepted. I've noticed that when you treat the kids with respect and explain to them the reasons why you do what you do, they tend to respond in a good way. If you think about it, that's the way people are. It's hard to have respect for rules you don't understand. When you don't explain your reasons to kids, they usually end up asking you the same questions over and over again.
Last week I talked about giving prizes out for kids who performed well in certain categories; it seems to be working out really well. Kids that wanted to just stay in the whole game last week were volunteering to sit out, and there was no complaining from anyone this game. These kids are really taking the concept and running with it. Now, they all can't wait to come to practice on Thursdays, because they know when it's over I give out prizes.
This week we'll be working on just knowing our plays more and grabbing flags. Next game we play the Steelers in our first home game. Hopefully within two weeks everyone will know all the plays enough that our huddles will be within 10 seconds. We'll, I'll see ya next week!
